Blunt rotavator blades make your tractor work harder, burn more diesel, and reduce soil finish quality.
This short guide shows how to sharpen your blades safely — right in your own workshop.

What You'll Need

  • Hand grinder or bench grinder
  • Safety gloves and glasses
  • Wire brush or sandpaper
  • Blade holding clamp or vice
  • Grease and clean cloth
  • Tip: Always disconnect the rotavator from the tractor before removing blades.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Remove the Blades Safely

Use the correct size spanner to remove the bolts. Keep nuts and washers safely aside.
If the bolts are tight, use a penetrating oil or rust remover spray.

Tip: Take a photo before removing the first blade — so you remember its direction when reassembling

2. Clean the Blades

Use a wire brush or sandpaper to clean mud, rust, and old grease.
This ensures an even sharpening surface and extends life.

Did You Know? Clean blades cut faster even without sharpening.

3. Sharper the Edge

Hold the blade firmly using a vice or clamp. Use a grinder at about 30–35° angle.
Move the grinder evenly along the edge. Avoid overheating — let it cool between strokes.

Safety Tip: Always wear safety glasses and gloves. Do not grind near petrol or diesel.

4. Balance the Blade

After sharpening, hang the blade using a nail or rod through its bolt hole.
If one side tilts down, remove a bit more metal from that side.

Balanced blades prevent vibration and gearbox stress.

5. Refit & Grease

Clean the blade hub and bolts, apply light grease, and refit blades in correct direction.

Tighten all bolts firmly, and rotate the rotor by hand to ensure free movement

Benefits of Sharp Blades

  • Less Diesel: Cuts faster, less drag.
  • Better Soil Finish: Even depth and texture.
  • Longer Life: Sharpening is cheaper than replacing.
  • Less Vibration: Protects bearings and gearbox
